Blu is a manufacturer of Smartphones using the Android operating system, and smartwatches. One of their innovations was a phone that supports a dual SIM card, which allows you to have two phone lines on a single device. They presently make 14 different series of Smartphones, ranging from low-end devices with a smaller screen, to their Studio series, with high-speed capabilities and greater durability. They are GSM (= Global System for Mobile Communications) phones, which require a SIM card, identified with a particular carrier, and are unlocked phones, giving you the freedom of choosing the carrier that offers you the features that you need the most (as opposed to a CDMA phone that is hardwired for a certain phone company).

But, people use their phones for far more than just making phone calls nowadays. You can find Blu phones with breathtaking displays which allow you to view photos, movies, and television content, with resolution rivaling a computer display. They can also house gigabytes of storage for storing pictures and movies–and you can even expand that memory with a microSD card.

We’ve composed this buyer’s guide to help you make the right decision when selecting a Blu phone. It’ll help you:

  • Choose the right type of Blu phone,

  • See useful tips about that type of Blu phone,

  • Read reviews of different Blu phones, and what customers are saying,

  • Compare prices and find the best deals.

Types of Blu Phones

  • Series of Blu Phones: Blu presently has 14 series of phones and tablets. These are the most popular series at present:

    • R-series: These are marked by a curved glass display, a chamfered edge, and metal casing with high structural integrity.

    • Studio G and Studio XL: These are more affordable phones, with a lower battery life and screen resolution.

    • Grand X: These have a slightly larger display, but are more affordable, owing to their having only 1 GB of RAM and a camera of only 8 megapixels resolution.

    • Vivo: This series marked the first phone to use a double SIM card. Other high-end features include a face recognition app to unlock the phone, and phase-detection auto-focus when taking pictures.

What reviewers say

  • Dual Sim: As we mentioned, Blu was one of the innovators of a phone that can take a dual SIM. It allows you to use a single phone for two phone lines–say, one for work calls, and one for home calls.

  • Operating system: Android is the default operating system for Smartphones. The different versions are assigned code names (named after a different candy or snack) as well as numbers. The latest version released in 2017 is 8.0, “Oreo”, but you’ll see Blu phones running 5.0 (“Lollipop”), 6.0 (“Marshmallow”), and 7.0 (“Nougat”).

Important Features

  • Camera resolution: Since so many people use their phones for taking pictures, both of what they’re viewing, as well as selfies, it’s an important spec to consider before choosing a Blu phone. The Vivo XL 2 is the top-of-the-line among Blu phones, with a 13 Megapixel main camera with an LED flash, and an 8 Megapixel front-facing camera for taking selfies. The more megapixels translates into greater amounts of detail in the pictures that you take. It also has an f2.0 aperture to the camera, for a greater depth of field in taking a picture, and phase-detection autofocus, which produces a noticeably sharper image.

  • Display: You’ll prefer a larger display, so as to catch the details better.  The “R” series has a 5” HD display and uses curved Gorilla Glass screen. The curved glass gives you an immersive view from every angle, along with better graphics and color. Gorilla Glass is Corning glass that is protected against scratches, cracks, and breakage, so it shouldn’t shatter if you drop your phone.

  • Memory: You’ll see that the phones have two figures for their memory. You’ll see both ROM and RAM. ROM is “read-only memory”, and is where the programming for the device is written. RAM is “random-access memory”, where programs are placed when you want to operate an app. When you turn the device off, the information in ROM remains, while the information in RAM is erased. The BLU Grand X G090Q has 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of ROM. The Vivo XL 2 has a massive 32 GB of RAM, and 3 GB of ROM. When you run an app on your phone, it’s loaded into RAM, while apps, media such as pictures and music, and games are stored in ROM. The greater the RAM, the more programs you can run at once. The more ROM, the more media you can store on your phone.
